SFRS is pleased that we have been successful in developing our Family Roots Therapy Program which is designed to bring Sooke area families together to connect, play and learn in the great outdoors. This is a joint program of Sooke Family Resource Society, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Victoria and the Power To Be Adventure Therapy Society.
The program launched in July and several families are now participating in wilderness adventures which are aimed at helping families become more in tune with each other through becoming more in tune with nature.
Through a multi-family adventure therapy group that will meet one Saturday a month over the course of 8 months. Games, initiatives, and wilderness experiences will serve to increase the resiliency of the family system by: expanding peer-support networks, strengthening family bonds, promoting family-centered recreation and exercise, building resources for navigating stress and conflict within the family, and enhancing the socio-emotional capacity of the family system to adapt to the changes of a growing youth. Additionally, a family counselor will meet with each family individually once a month to address the family’s unique needs and concerns, and help integrate their learning into daily life.
